Say "hello" to Kia.

I'm Special!   Volunteer Favorite!

When one of our volunteers learned from shelter staff of Kia and Kona's agonizing story, she swooped in and brought them into the safety net of GSROC.

Kia is a beautiful purebred white female who was very bonded to her blind brother, Kona. They found themselves being taken from their home and loaded into an animal control truck when their owner passed away... They ended up at a very high kill shelter, where of course, they were terrified. This shelter works with an ASPCA. As unbelievable as it sounds, the ASPCA came to evaluate Kia and Kona and decided they would take Kia into their care, but leave Kona behind. As Kia was taken from the cage that held her and her beloved Kona, both dogs cried and fought to stay together. You see, Kia is not only Kona's sister, she was his seeing eye dog. Kona was blind...

As the heartless worker dragged Kia away, other shelter workers were horrified by what they were witnessing. Poor Kona just sat in his cage and cried. He had lost his human, and now they had taken away his best friend and quite literally, his eyes...

One animal control worker put his job on the line and called GSROC to plea for our help. We had a volunteer there the minute the shelter opened the next morning. After being told EXACTLY what would happen if these 2 soul mates were not reunited IMMEDIATELY, suffice it to say that Kia and Kona were reunited...They cried and cried with happiness while giving each other kisses...

As if that were not tragic enough, after being rescued, Kona recently passed with his sister by his side at one of our boarding facilities. We found out that Kona had cancer, and there was nothing that could be done to save him. Although we are saddened by the loss of Kona, we are at least gratefult o know he did not die alone, and he did not die in a cold heartless shelter. He was with people who cared for him, and his sister was there until the end.

Kia is approimately 6 years old and as mellow as they come. She is perfect in the car and walks very well on leash.

The only thing missing in her life is a family of their very own... If you have any questions about Kia, you can call Shawn at 714/206-9002 or email ShawnGSDRescue@aol.com
