Luck was on this little guy’s side, no doubt about it… A family was returning to their Orange County home from a Spring Break trip to Palm Springs when the wife yelled for her husband to “STOP THE CAR !!!” He asked why and she told him she thought she had seen a dog. He told her they were in the middle of the desert and no way could it have been a dog. She insisted she had seen a dog, and her husband pulled over and began backing up on the side of the highway. Sure enough, there was what looked like a dog about 30 yards away… They got out and called to the dog who came close, but not close enough as he was so frightened. They went back to the car, got in the cooler and found some hot dogs and lunch meat. It took about an hour but finally the little guy came to them… He was starved, thirsty, shaking with fright and filthy. He allowed himself to be lifted into their car…

They did not know what to do with him once they had him safe. When these wonderful and caring people got home, they did an online search and found German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County. We got the call about this little guy and while we are beyond overloaded with dogs, vet and boarding bills, we knew if he had survived being dumped to die in the desert, we had to help. Sometimes we just have to go on a wing and a prayer, because we are tapped out. Colt’s boarding bill is 115.00 a week. It is only through your wonderful donations we can help the Colt’s of this world…

Colt is about 6 months old and we call him our Wonder Dog. Somehow, he managed to stay alive for who knows how long after being abandoned in the middle of the desert. He is sweet, kind and gentle. He is a dream in the car and loves to give gentle kisses. He loves to lean against you and is in heaven when someone is giving him a hug. He is most happy when he can climb in your lap as our pictures show. We are now interviewing for a wonder family to love and cherish him forever…

If you would like to meet Colt, please complete the online application and an adoption counselor will contact you.

Adoption Application If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, you may submit an application online or via fax. If you choose to send a fax, please download the Adoption Application here in PDF format; fill it out and sign it. You can fax it to us at 714-773-9430.

Home Visit Prior to any dog going home, we do require a home visit to ensure that your environment is safe and secure. Once your home has been approved, the adoption can move forward.

Adoption Donation In light of the rising vet care costs associated with Giardia tests and boarding at vets, we are raising our adoption donation for adult GSDs to $395.00 starting on July 1, 2021

The adoption donations for other dogs will remain the same — $475.00 for purebred puppies, $375 for mixed puppies. (On a case by case basis, e.g. senior for senior, we will place a senior for $275.00 with a senior.)

This donation is tax-deductible as allowed by law and helps to offset the costs that we have incurred for the dog’s care and housing during his or her stay with our group. The minimum adoption donation does not entirely cover the investments that we have made in the dogs, so if you are in a position to give more, we would be honored to receive your additional donation. All adoption donations go directly toward the needs of our dogs.

All dogs adopted through GSROC are spayed or neutered, current on their vaccines and de-wormed. Because the minimum Adoption Donation rarely covers the costs associated with each dog, we ask that adopters who are in a position to give additional funds do so at their discretion.
