When our vet met Nikko, she was shocked by how badly this boy had been neglected by his previous family. His eyes lacked any luster, his ears were infected, and he appeared to have a fungal infection in a rear foot causing it to swell to 4 times its normal size. Before his rescue, someone had applied some sort of green tar substance to his open wounds.
Nikko had clearly been in a lot of pain and distress for a very long time, but we are confident that with good care and love, he will be able to live a healthy and happy life again.
UPDATE: 3/5/2014 –
Nikko may require a foot amputation. Vets are puzzled and believe that a deep infection in the bone is taking a toll on his overall health. We have consulted with several vets, and now we will take him to a third vet in the hopes of saving his foot.
UPDATE 4/5/2014 –
Nikko is having bone marrow biopsy done this week. Vets are encouraged by 10% improvement in the foot swelling but have yet to get to the root cause.
UPDATE 4/15/14 — Good news! Vets have ruled out any form of cancer in Nikko’s bone. Bad news: They still can’t find a cause for his oversized foot. Thyroid medication has helped lift Nikko’s spirits, and good diet and supplements have restored the luster to his coat and the smile to his face.
UPDATE 5/11/14 We still have no diagnosis to explain Nikko’s condition; we have been assured that it is not bone cancer based on the test results. Nikko looks fantastic, and does not appear to be in an pain, however his rear foot is still much larger than the other feet. Nikko is much brighter and he LOVES to lean and snuggle with people of all sizes. He is very selective about the dogs that he likes, but we are teaching him to trust.
In addition to help with his enormous veterinary bills, Nikko is seeking a foster family to help him continue his recovery. Can you help with either of these needs?
Nikko will also benefit tremendously from a foster home. Please contact us if you can take this gentle boy in while he recovers.

Home Visit Prior to any dog going home, we do require a home visit to ensure that your environment is safe and secure. Once your home has been approved, the adoption can move forward.
Adoption Donation In light of the rising vet care costs associated with Giardia tests and boarding at vets, we are raising our adoption donation for adult GSDs to $395.00 starting on July 1, 2021
The adoption donations for other dogs will remain the same — $475.00 for purebred puppies, $375 for mixed puppies. (On a case by case basis, e.g. senior for senior, we will place a senior for $275.00 with a senior.)
This donation is tax-deductible as allowed by law and helps to offset the costs that we have incurred for the dog’s care and housing during his or her stay with our group. The minimum adoption donation does not entirely cover the investments that we have made in the dogs, so if you are in a position to give more, we would be honored to receive your additional donation. All adoption donations go directly toward the needs of our dogs.
All dogs adopted through GSROC are spayed or neutered, current on their vaccines and de-wormed. Because the minimum Adoption Donation rarely covers the costs associated with each dog, we ask that adopters who are in a position to give additional funds do so at their discretion.
