Reluctantly, we made the decision to postpone our Drive For The Dogs golf tournament as we were not able to secure enough golfers to make it the type of wonderful event that we are accustomed to. We know that the economy is the culprit and we are already looking at rescheduling for a date in […]

If it can rain cats and dogs, could it also rain puppies? GSROC certainly thinks so. In recent months, GSROC has experienced a significant spike in the number of puppies coming through our doors. Not wanting the mother dogs to whelp and raise their babies in isolation or innocent puppies to learn about life on […]
With our banner held high, GSROC proudly marched with honor as the FIRST rescue ever to be invited to participate in the 104 year old Huntington Beach Independence Day parade! Mr. Shomer is a magnificent senior boy, approximately 7 years old. Some people have told us that he might be a shiloh shepherd because he bears the characteristic coat and build, but it’s possible that he is a long-haired shepherd. Either way, Shomer is a very striking guy who loves to be with his person. […]

Well, McDuff isn’t exactly a German Shepherd, but he WAS rescued by GSROC last year when we were called in to assist dogs that had been kept in unpeakable conditions by a “hoarder” (dog collector) in Kern County. After enduring some of his life in the prison-like compound of the dog hoarder, McDuff (Duffy to […]

Our very own “Maximus”, adopted by Melinda and Bob, recently attended the memorial service for “Bandit”, the Chandler, Arizona police dog whose life was cut short due to the carelessness of his handler. Bandit perished when he was left in a police cruiser in the scorching Arizona heat. Maximus proudly represented GSROC and the rescued […]
When we discovered that our sweet Taz has a congenital condition that is causing him to gradually lose his vision, our spirits fell. Here was a sweet, young, handsome dog, so eager to be someone’s special boy, yet Fate had dealt him a cruel blow. Taz’s eyesight is diminishing little by little, and it is […]

She has a regal air and look about her, and her soft coat glistens when she is sunbathing. Sarah is a sophisticated girl who is looking for a quieter environment. Sarah is affectionate, but not clingy. When the other dogs in her foster home are acting silly, Sarah prefers to laze on the sofa and […]
At 5 months old, Sully should be enjoying the best things in life, like rolling in the grass, splashing in puddles, and playing “keep away” with other puppies. But poor Sully didn’t get to experience those things. Instead, his irresponsible family let him get hit by a car and left by the side of the […]

14 month old Lexy came to us from the OC Shelter. We received a frantic call that a momma dog was giving birth in the cold, concrete dog run. When we rushed in to help her, we discovered a sweet, gentle, frightened girl trying to take care of her 7 puppies, even though she was […]

Our volunteers and our dogs are exhausted after three days of meeting and greeting potential adopters at this year’s Pet Expo event, but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world! More attendees than ever came through the gates at the Orange County Fairgrounds, and GSROC had a lot of great dogs, new products and […]
It’s not very often that a “blue” shepherd is born, let alone finds itself in need of rescue. That’s why all of us at GSROC were particularly surprised to get our second blue shepherd in the past year.
To gain more insight into canine behavior and pack order, GSROC volunteers Rita and Vann made the long trip to Wolf Mountain Sanctuary in Lucerne Valley. The sanctuary is a rescue operation similar to GSROC.
Once upon a time, there was an extra, extra large dog named Cocoa Bear.
We are bursting with pride to share that Jambalaya (Jambie to his pals) is getting lots of praise and attention at the Training Academy where he is auditioning for a role as a real life bomb or narcotics dog! Jambie was selected by
Each of them has had the good fortune of being rescued, but all are in dire need of veterinary assistance. We want to give our dogs the very best care, but we can’t do it without your help. While many rescue groups turn their backs on the dogs that bring with them high medical costs, […]
Our precious 6-month-old Valentino fought long and hard to overcome the health challenges that Life dealt him. First, he underwent a complex surgery to repair a broken leg that had gone untreated at a local animal shelter for over a week. We realized that Valentino was in pain and we immediately called up on our […]
When Charlee arrived, his condition was so poor that we thought he was a much older dog. He was practically bald on his hind quarters and barely able to lift his head. A combination of failing health and a broken spirit had caused Charlie to give up hope of ever being loved again. After a […]
Shade was patiently waiting in one of our boarding facilities to be adopted, but instead she became violently ill. When she began vomiting, we rushed her to the vet for a diagnosis. Her blood test levels reveal some degree of kidney failure, so we are trying to determine why a young, vital, 5 year old […]
When Oliver Twist arrived at GSROC he had no confidence and was afraid of everything. He was covered with ticks that were literally sucking the life out of him. Our athletic superstar, Jambie, was tested today for possible agility work. He had a ball, literally and figuratively!
Our volunteers are always a little surprised by some of the questions that we are asked when we are attending adoption events with our dogs. Because we live and breathe rescue work every single day, sometimes we don’t realize that many people have misconceptions or mistaken information about how animal welfare groups operate. We wanted […]

We’re always surprised when we see people at our adoption events with incredulous looks on their faces. People approach us and say that they just can’t comprehend why there are so many unwanted shepherds in the world…we’ve even been asked if we’re doing a ‘stunt’!!! The sad truth is that GSROC is only able to […]
Why is fostering a dog such an important component of our rescue efforts? The magic of fostering helps us get to know a dog’s personality, evaluate their health, and teach them manners and a few basic commands – basically help them transform into a dog that noone can pass up for adoption. A dog living […]
This is the time of year that we are excited to open our mail and email to see photos of our alumnae that have passed through the rescue over the years. It’s wonderful for us to see them in their happy homes, leading full and complete lives–the lives that they were always meant to have. […]

People frequently ask us, “Why don’t you get the police or Search and Rescue units to take your dogs?” Well, it’s not that simple. First, the dogs selected for this work must meet many qualifications, not just ‘look the part’. The dogs must pass extensive physical exams, including hip xrays, and they must possess strong […]
All rescue events and activities are managed and coordinated through the tireless efforts of volunteers. We do not have any paid employees. All of our costs for rescuing, boarding, feeding, providing veterinary care, spaying or neutering, and making sure dogs are vaccinated and de-wormed are paid for through donations, adoption donations and fundraisers. It is […]
Who can forget the look of sadness and despair on Shy Boy’s face when we first snapped his photo out at the canine concentration camp that had been his home for four lonely years? Truly, his story of abandonment and his broken spirit are some of the saddest that we’ve experienced in our work that […]
Our Pet of the Month, Jeremy, came a very long way to find safety with GSROC. After enduring a series of bad homes that neglected him, Jeremy made the 11 hour flight from Hong Kong with the help of some devoted animal lovers there. Jeremy has never known what it feels like to be a […]

We are proud and relieved to say that the Kern County dog that we previously knew only as Number 76 is safe and sound in our care! If you recall, our volunteers first met this dog when we were rescuing several purebred shepherds from a horrible “collector” situation in Kern County. As our volunteer was […]

She walks well on a leash but is very strong, so she would do best in a family that is active and experienced. Maggy loves […]
The third shepherd that GSROC committed to rescuing from the Kern facility was known as “C.D.”, short for “Crazy Dog” because he had chewed his own tail off due to the stress of captivity in tight, isolated quarters. As we all know, there is no worse torture for German Shepherds than to deprive them of […]
Imagine, if you can, standing in the middle of a huge dirt square with nothing green anywhere in sight. Surrounding you on all four sides are walls of dog kennels, some more dilapidated than others, forming a complete box around the open sandy area that you are in. The outside of the square is completely […]
We’re excited to report that the cell phone drive is going well! So far, we have collected at least 6 dozen phones (we forgot to count before we sent them!) which filled 4 large boxes. These have all been shipped off to the recycling facility and we are waiting to hear how much we have […]
Recently, we were advised of a very sad situation that has arisen in Kern County. It involved a dog sanctuary that had been shut down by the County. The sanctuary had failed to meet the County’s requirements, but that left 112 dogs of all sizes and shapes with no where to go. Most of the […]
Typically, our organization gets called upon to rescue one or two purebred white German Shepherds each month. White German Shepherds, while certainly not “rare”, are still not as common as black and tan shepherds, and in the past, we were not seeing them in large numbers in the shelters. All that changed this week when […]
So far, both of our Dog of the Month spotlight dogs have been adopted, so we’re hoping that the same will hold true for sweet Sandy because she could use a turn of luck. Sandy’s beautiful face and doe-like eyes shine through even though her once-perfect ears have been eaten away by biting flies. When […]

We are collecting used cell phones to submit to an environmentally friendly company for recycling. For each used phone that we supply, the recycling company will make a donation to GSROC.
